Fall Color walk, 10/06/11

Last week we had amazing fall colors in and around our yard.  This maple in the front of our yard is probably my favorite.  It was a beautiful sight when you were in our porch.  To the left of it is a beautiful bright yellow, too.

We knew the peak for fall colors in our area was getting close, so we debated on a trip to Duluth and the north shore area, but in the end we decided to stay in our own "backyard" and take a hike on the Ice Age trail.

Maria was, hmmm, challenging on this walk.  She enjoyed parts of it, but it really was a long hike, 3.39 miles according to my CardioTrainer app that tracked our movements using GPS.  We both took turns carrying her, but she did walk a good amount of it.

Before we got into the really woodsy segment, I think Aaron had given up, too!  It was a pretty warm day, warmer than average for our area in October.

My husband, scoping out the area.  He ended up finding a bench at the top of a hill, and I am pretty sure I would have walked by him without noticing!  One of the kids spotted him sitting there, though.

I found many photo opportunities along the way.

The trail went alongside a stream, and the kids had a lot of fun exploring.

We also found some huge rock formations along the trail.  We had to take breaks to explore them and give me cause for alarm!

Alayna took this picture of us.  :-)

My little ham!

Aaron found an adorable tree frog by the big rock.

Half of the kids liked the walk, the other half didn't like it as much (though they all loved the rocks and stream), but overall it was pretty fun.  The leaves were starting to fall that day, and by the next day ...

My beautiful red tree had nearly lost all of its leaves.

And now ... over a week later?  It's looking pretty brown and bare around here.  Snow, here we come!
